Hummingbird has supported efforts to develop organic seed varieties, including working with Oregon State University’s Barley Project to bring Streaker Barley to market. Specially bred to be stripe rust resistant, a cereal disease endemic to the Pacific Northwest, this barley was named “Streaker” because it describes the naked (hull-less) nature of the variety. This means the hulls don’t need to be mechanically removed like most barley, as the hulls fall off during harvest. Hummingbird contracts directly with Pacific Northwest farmers to grow this unique product.
