Our Organic Black Lentils comes from Avena Foods, who partner with many family farms in Saskatchewan, Canada. Introduced in 1994, these black lentils caught the attention of chefs all over the world as the lentil looks like caviar, is rich in flavor and makes an impressive addition to any dish.

Lentils originated in the East and were one of the first crops domesticated for human consumption in Neolithic times. Although probably best known in Indian cuisine, lentils have long been a staple in the Mediterranean, southern Europe, and South America. Lentils are often featured as the center of the plate in vegetarian restaurants, and grace white tablecloth restaurants around the world.

Lentils are rich in dietary fiber, have a significant amount of folate and magnesium, are full of complex carbohydrates and have a high amount of important minerals and antioxidants. Our Organic Black Lentils have a 24% protein content, the highest of any lentil. Black lentils cook in about 20 minutes at a simmer. Enjoy our beautiful Black Lentils as a side dish, in pilafs or as a bed for fish.
