Organic: Why is it Growing?

Organic: Why is it Growing?

Organic continues to be one of the fastest growing sectors in US Agriculture. According to the Organic Trade Association (OTA), Organic sales grew to a new record high, in 2020. Additionally, the number of acres of certified organic land operated increased gradually from 3.6 million in 2011 to 4.9 million acres in 2021.

When surveyed about their concerns regarding food and beverages, most consumers shared that their top priorities were addressed by Organic standards. For example, 70% expressed concerns over the use of synthetic chemical pesticides and GMOs, which are prohibited in organic products. Organic certification, and subsequently the use of the Organic seal, is a third party audited and verified standard.

At Hummingbird, we believe there are many reasons why people are choosing Organic food more and more. The largest number of consumers still make the Organic choice for themselves and their families, for better quality food, but the Organic standard is also good for environmental sustainability, as well as good for business.

People expect to see the full scope of their values reflected in the products they choose—this includes not just environmental sustainability, but also animal welfare and social justice. Recent surveys show that a majority of Americans believe that Organic products are better for the planet, healthier for people and animals, and more ethically produced than conventional food products. In the US, 82% of households stock organic food in their pantries.
