Hummingbird has worked with the University of Oregon to supply Oregon and regionally sourced Organic foods since 2008. We supply blueberries, barley, wheat flour, beans, wild rice and pumpkin seeds that are grown in Oregon, by Organic Farmers with whom Hummingbird has a direct relationship. We also supply pacific northwest grown organic lentils and more beans as well as Oregon honey and teff.
One of the most incredible things about sourcing agricultural products from local farmers is that we are supporting healthy rural economies and economic growth for our communities. Sourcing Organic products is even more impactful because in communities where there is a high concentration of Organic farms and business, there is an increase in wages and decrease in poverty rates, according to recent research. In fact, Counties with “organic hot spots” showed an increased income of $2,000 annually and poverty decreases by 1.35%; 50% of Oregon counties are “organic hot spots” (https://www.ota.com/hotspots).
We are all interconnected. Whether we live in rural or urban areas, we all eat.
We are proud of working with the University of Oregon, as a way to bridge students and the university with the larger community. It is exciting to us that we are providing the opportunity for students and University staff to eat locally sourced, Organic food.
