Bean, Black Urad

Our Organic Black Urad Beans are grown on a second generation family farm in Pleasant Grove, California. Beginning with 45 acres of Organic popcorn in 1985, the 3,000 acre farm has been fully converted to Organic since 1996. The farmer performs ongoing research aimed at improving yields and reducing inputs associated with growing Organic field crops.

Black Urad Beans have been cultivated in India for more than 2000 years. These beans are sold in three forms; whole (Urad, Black Gram), split, and split and peeled (Urad Dal, White Lentils). A very nutritious bean, they are the same size, shape and have a similar taste to Mung Beans.

Although not necessary, you can soak the beans for at least 4 hours with a bit of salt added to the soaking water. Soaked beans will cook in about 45 minutes. Unsoaked they will need at least an hour, and they tend to fall apart more easily than soaked beans.
