Hummingbird has supported efforts to develop organic seed varieties, including working with Oregon State University’s Barley Project to bring Streaker Barley to market. Specially bred to be stripe rust resistant, a cereal disease endemic to the Pacific Northwest, this barley was named “Streaker” because it describes the naked (hull-less) nature of the variety. This means that it does not need to have the hulls mechanically removed like most barley, as the hulls fall off in the combine during harvest. James Henderson, Hummingbird’s Farm Liaison, recognized the beneficial growing characteristics of this variety for Willamette Valley farmers. Hummingbird contracts directly with Oregon farmers to grow this unique product.
