Our Organic Spelt Berries are grown on the sunny Columbia Plateau in Eastern Washington on a family farm that is passionate about growing ancient grains and oil seed that grow well in their climate.
Spelt is an ancient farro grain (Mediterranean term for original cereal grains) that predates wheat. The Romans grew and expanded spelt cultivation as far north as Britain. German speaking people made spelt their "Korn", their most important bread grains, until the late 1800s.
Gold in color with a nutty and slightly sweet flavor, spelt is high in protein and nutrients. Due to its particular gluten, spelt tends to be easier to digest.
A whole grain delicious in stews, as the main ingredient in grain salad, cooked as a breakfast porridge, made into spelt bread when turned into flour, or enjoyed as a side dish.
